Amid ongoing protests over hostel fee hike in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar's car was allegedly attacked by students inside university premises on Saturday.

Kumar alleged that the students tried to physically attack him and damaged his car.

"I was attacked today. I had gone to visit the School of Arts and Aesthetics, JNU where around 10-15 students surrounded me. They were trying to pull me down and in a mood to attack me. Fortunately, I was rescued by security and managed to escape," the vice-chancellor was quoted as saying by ANI.

Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers Federation (JNUTF) demanded a probe into the matter.

"Today, JNU vice-chancellor Prof M Jagdesh Kumar was attacked by a violent mob near the administration building. We demand an immediate inquiry and severe action against the perpetrators," it said.

This came two days after the JNU administration conducted a meeting with the 2019 JNUSU presidential candidates on Thursday to discuss the proposed fees hike issue. The meeting was also attended by Kumar.

After the meeting, he had appealed to students and urged them to call off the strike in the interest of thousands of students.

Earlier, JNU administration had moved in Delhi High Court seeking contempt action against Delhi police and several JNU students and leaders for allegedly violating HC's ruling which restrains them to protest within 100 meters of admin block of university.

Delhi High Court on Friday had sought affidavit from JNU regarding the details of students against whom contempt petition was filed.

The court on Wednesday had directed the Delhi Police to provide adequate security to JNU Vice-Chancellor, registrar and other officials for ensuring the proper functioning of the university.
