J&K: Another civilian killed by terrorists, seventh in one month

Terrorists sent a chilling reminder to the government when they assassinated a Panchayat member in south Kashmir's Kulgam district.

Abdul Majeed Dar, who was formerly associated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was shot at and injured when terrorists barged into his house at Shalipora-Katrasoo village in Kulgam district at around 7.30pm on Wednesday.

Dar was immediately rushed to district hospital and he was shifted to Shri Maharja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital in Srinagar. After battling for life, Dar succumbed to his wounds at 11.30 am on Thursday. Dar had contested and won the panchayat polls as an independent candidate.

Police have registered a case and massive operation has been launched by the security forces to identify and track down the militants responsible for his killing.

Dar's killing comes five days after militants shot dead a civilian inside his shop in broad daylight in Baramulla town on Saturday. Arjumand Majeed Bhat alias Raju Mistry, 35, a chemist by profession was shot dead when two militants stormed his shop and fired at him from the close range.

Dar's killing is the seventh in the series and fourth in Kashmir since election dates were announced. On March 27 terrorists sent a chilling reminder to the security forces on Wednesday when they killed a civilian in a cold blood in South Kashmir's Shopian district.

On March 15 militants abducted forty year old Manzoor Ahmad Lone from his home at Dogripora village of Pulwama district and shot him dead in the neighbouring Gulzarpora village.

On March 16 terrorists stormed the residence of the woman Special Police Officer (SPO) and shot her dead in the cold blood at Vehil village of South Kashmir's Shopian district .

On March 13, militants killed an army deserter Showkat Ahmed Naik from a point blank range this afternoon at Pinglina village of Pulwama district.

On March 18, Mohsin Ahmad Wani of Reshipora Tral was shot at by the terrorists.

Police bust terrorist hideout

  • Police Thursday busted a terrorist hideout and found a rifle, which is used by the Pakistani army, in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, officials here said. 
  • On a specific information, police launched a search operation in Marwah-Dacchan area of Kishtwar district and busted a hideout in Drungai forest area, SSP Kishtwar Shakti Pathak said.
  • A 7.62mm Heckler and Koch G3A3 rifle, used by the Pakistani army, was found at the site, he said.
  • Nearly 100 round of bullets and one AK rifle magazine and one grenade were also found there, the SSP said.
