Internet services were suspended for 48 hours beginning 10 PM on February 28, 2020 (Friday), in six districts of Meghalaya - East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills following violent clashes leaving one person dead in the Shella area.
A night curfew has been imposed in Shillong and adjoining areas by the East Khasi Hills district from 10 PM on February 28, 2020, to 8 AM on February 29, 2020.

The internet shutdown and night curfew orders have been issued in the wake of violent clashes erupting between Khasi Students Union (KSU) members and non-tribals at Shella, East Khasi Hills.
KSU members who are opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) were holding a meeting with local villagers demanding an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for the entire state at Ichamati village at Shella.
Suddenly the non-tribals got into a war of words with KSU members and clashes broke out. While one KSU member and one police officer were seriously injured, they were rushed to the local hospital.
Later, the KSU member identified as Lurshai Hynniewta succumbed to grievous injuries in the hospital.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad Sangma chaired a high-level meeting on the matter. “I have just chaired a high-level meeting on the issue. The state home minister, the home secretary, DGP and other officials were present. We have so far imposed a night curfew. We will further access the situation and make a decision on the withdrawal of curfew and internal suspension. We have deployed police officials too in the area,” said Sangma.
On the other hand, the Governor of Meghalaya, Tathagata Roy, took to Twitter and wrote, “I appeal to all citizens in Meghalaya, tribal or non-tribal. Keep calm. Don’t spread rumours and don’t listen to rumours. The Chief Minister has spoken to me. He assured me he is taking all the necessary steps. We are agreed that the prime requirement now is to maintain Law and Order.
