Haryana might be still holding tight to its patriarchal conscience. But, this election, the parties are banking on ma-bahu-beti to garner support and votes. Even as the lead political players didn't earn any brownie points for fielding enough women candidates, they seem to be making up for it by channelling 'nari shakti' in campaigning.

Women, who are mostly family members, are leading the campaign trail in Haryana, focusing especially on the rural areas. If in Hisar, Dabwali MLA Naina Chautala is vehemently cheering for her son and incumbent MP Dushyant Chautala, in Kurukshetra, a daughter has jumped the bandwagon to sway voters in favour of her fathers.

Chitra, daughter of Congress candidate Nirmal Singh is covering the length and breadth of the constituency for him.

That she's also the general secretary and social-media in-charge of Mahila Congress is holding her in good stead while breaking the ice with rural womenfolk, convincing them to vote for her father.

Naina Chautala has addressed over 50 rallies in the state so far.

On the other hand, the Chautala women, fresh out of a bitter family power tussle, are tirelessly campaigning for Arjun Chautala, grandson of Indian National Lok Dal Supreme Om Prakash Chautala and Kurukshetra contender. His mother Kanta along with her sister in law and Arjun's aunt Sunita are touring villages to secure win for the party that is directly fighting its own kith.

BJP's Sanjay Bhatia, who is fielded from Karnal, is also banking on his wife Anju and daughter for door-to-door campaign in urban areas of Panipat and Karnal.

The most interesting facet of women power is at full display in Hisar, which has been touted as a hot seat in these parliamentary elections. Mothers of Dushyant (JJP candidate), Bhavya from Congress who is debuting in politics and Brijender Singh are on the campaign trail for their sons.

Congress' Hansi MLA Renuka Bishnoi, Uchana MLA Prem Lata and Dabwali MLA Naina are the mothers for the trio.

Patriarchal

  • Mother, wife or daughter-in-law working hard at canvassing for votes to ensure that the family legacy is intact
  • Chautala, Bishnoi and Hooda clans, who dominated the political scape, roping in women
  • State is infamous for its skewed sex ratio and patriarchal attitude towards women.
