Election ads: How convinced are you?

We ask people what they think of the aggressive advertising tactics by political parties

Much talk over election campaign spends have been spoken of in the weeks past. Political parties have splurged on getting noticed in this crucial Lok Sabha election as 900 million eligible voters take to the polling booths. While most concur the increased election campaign budgets are a tactic to woo first time voters, it begs the question: how much are you convinced?

While catching the last showing of a movie in a theatre, Ekta Bhula, finance professional, admits, “I don’t like watching them [ads]. Earlier ads had information now it feels like brain washing.” Shreya Lobo, 24, owner Nineteen95 Patisserie, says, “It might have been better to show me why I should vote for a political party rather than why I shouldn’t vote for the other [party].” 

Others like Pranay Dharnidharka, a stock broker is not too fond of the ads that come with a movie experience these days. “I’d rather watch movie trailers instead,” he laughs. Ojas Deshpande asserts, “I don’t fall prey to these gimmicks.” While teenagers like 16-year-old Soham Shah, (who can’t cast his vote in this election,) prefers to tune out the ads. “I generally use my phone during those ads.”

Barring these, there are a plethora of ad campaigns in the form of rap songs like BJP’s Congress Se Azadi or Congress’ rebuttal with Dar ke aage azadi. Both songs mimicking the tonality of the recently released Gully Boy that shows the plight of the poor. Google’s ad transparency report (see the box above) revealed 3,789 total political ads on its platform with ad spends at Rs 13.92 crore as od April 2019. But are these roaring efforts falling on deaf ears?
