Against the backdrop of his meeting with Telangana counterpart K Chandrasekhar Rao, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Tuesday that regional parties will play a prominent role at the Centre after the Lok Sabha elections.

Vijayan, however, said there was no discussion between them about the prime ministerial candidate.

"Yesterday's meeting with KC Rao was significant. We discussed the national political scenario. According to Rao, both the fronts may not get a majority. So, the regional parties will play a prominent role. There were no discussions about the PM candidate," said Pinarayi Vijayan.

The TRS had been pitching the idea of a non-Congress, non-BJP federal front of regional parties for several months now.

Chandrasekhar Rao met his Kerala counterpart, Pinarayi Vijayan, heading the CPI-M-led LDF government, yesterday in Thiruvananthapuram, as part of his outreach to opposition parties. Kumar had accompanied him. The meeting between the two leaders took place at the official residence of Kerala chief minister.

KCR floated the idea of 'Federal Front' in March last year and initiated efforts to provide an alternative to both the BJP and Congress at the centre. He had subsequently met leaders of the Trinamool Congress, Biju Janata Dal, Samajwadi Party, Janata Dal(S) and the DMK. He also invited YSR Congress Party to join the proposed front.

On the other hand, K Kavitha, TRS MP and daughter of K Chandrasekhar Rao, said on Tuesday that no appointment is yet fixed between her father and DMK president MK Stalin. She made the comments after reports came that Stalin was busy in campaigning for Assembly elections and may not be meeting Rao. Reports said that the two leaders were to meet on May 13.

Kavitha told PTI recently that regional parties may hold the key for government formation.

She had said the TRS was in touch with various parties not part of the BJP-led NDA and Congress-anchored UPA on its efforts to forge a federal front of regional outfits.

A federal front would take good shape after the Lok Sabha election results are out, Kavitha had said.

Telangana went to polls in a single phase for all 17 seats on April 11. The results will be announced on May 23.

United Front-type government of regional parties supported by the Congress 'only likelihood': TRS leader

Meanwhile, a senior TRS leader said on Tuesday that a United Front-type government of regional parties supported by the Congress is the "only likelihood" after the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

B Vinod Kumar, sitting Lok Sabha member from Karimnagar and a confidant of KCR, claimed that regional parties would win more seats than BJP-led NDA or Congress-anchored UPA.

"United Front experiment was...Congress supporting from outside. This time also there is every likelihood of such a proposition. No doubt," Kumar, the deputy floor leader of TRS in Lok Sabha, told PTI.

On his assessment of the Lok Sabha election results, he said, "Congress crossing 100 (seats) and reaching 120-130 will be a herculean task for them (Congress). And BJP definitely not more than 170 (seats)".

According to him, the idea of United Front "surfaced" after the election results in 1996, but "now I hope that even before the results (on May 23), that talk is on".

"I think that (a UF government with Congress supporting from outside) is the only likelihood", Kumar said.
