Mauje Jalgaon loses out on monetary aid due to a mistake in recording tally

NASHIK: A typing error has recorded the Census tally of Mauje Jalgaon, a village near Niphad in Nashik, as 774, while the  actual population of the village (according to the 2001 Census)  is 2,763. The wrong figure was forwarded as the official figure in all government records, hitting several developmental schemes for the village based on population size.

The mistake got noticed when gram panchayat elections were announced in the village. “The villagers were getting ready to contest nine seats of the gram panchayat, but the election office sanctioned only seven seats according to the population size recorded.

Some missed the opportunity to contest because of this. It was then that the mistake was revealed,” said Rajaram Shelar, Zila Parishad member, Niphad block.

Developmental activities planned for the village were also affected. Shelar said that the 12th Finance Commission makes monetary sanctions per person for development. But since the population size of the village was reduced drastically by about 2000 people, less monetary aid came in.

According to the 12th Finance Commission, funds sanctioned to every village are to be utilised for improving social facilities like water supply, sanitation and cremation facilities.

Mauje Jalgaon has received funds according to the wrong Census figure twice so far. “The village has no proper sanitation facilities, water supply needs to be improved and much more needs to be done. But if we continue to receive insufficient aid, it will be difficult to carry out these projects,” Shelar points out.

Ironically, the 12th Finance Commission insists that gram panchyats, panchyat samitis and zilla parishads should maintain an updated database using modern technology. It also suggests that funds should be allocated for this.

In spite of this, the typing mistake has cost the village dear. The tehsil office of Niphad has agreed in a letter, dated March 9, 2006, that “according to the 2001 Census, the population of Mauje Jalgaon was 2,763. However, it has been published as 774 instead of 2763, by the Census office”.
