CBI officer who led Ishrat Jahan encounter killing probe retires

K Saleem Ali, Special Director CBI, who headed probe in sensitive encounter cases including those relating to the killing of Ishrat Jahan and Sadiq Jamal in Gujarat, today retired after a 35-year long police service.

An IPS officer of 1978 batch Manipur-Tripura cadre, Ali had joined CBI as Additional Director on September 28, 2011 and was promoted as Special Director, CBI on May 24, 2012. As Special Director, he was entrusted with heading the team probing Ishrat Jahan encounter killing case, Sadiq Jamal encounter case besides sensational murder cases including that of Bhanwari Devi in Rajasthan and RTI activist Shehla Masood in Madhya Pradesh.

Before joining CBI, he was Director General of Police in Tripura.

Ali has earlier held several important positions in Anti Corruption, Special Crimes, Administration, Special Unit & other Divisions and Zones in CBI from 1988 to 1999 and 2006 to 2009 including the post of Joint Director, DIG and SP.

"He has been associated with the investigations into a number of sensitive cases, including those entrusted to CBI by the Supreme Court and High Courts that ended in convictions of the accused persons," CBI spokesperson said here today. "Dr Ali has held various positions in Tripura, as Superintendent of Police of North Tripura, South Tripura and West Tripura and in Special Branch. He has served as IGP (Armed Police, Operations and Law and Order)," it said.

Ali has also served as IGP in Indo-Tibetan Border Police at Dehradun and here. He was awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold Discs during his tenure in ITBP. He is a Post-Graduate in Chemistry, MBA (International Finance) and Ph.D in Conflict Management.

"He has been decorated with the police medal for meritorious service and the President's Police Medal for distinguished service," it said.
