A city-based astrologer allegedly siphoned off gold ornaments worth Rs22.50 lakh belonging to his daughter-in-law. Kavita Wadhwani, a resident of Usmanpura, lodged a complaint of cheating at Naranpura police against her father-in-law Hariram Wadhwani and brother-in-law Manish Wadhwani, both residents of Champaner society in Juna Vadaj.

Kavita married Hariram’s second son Hemendra 12 years ago. She had got gold ornaments worth Rs22.50 lakh as wedding gift from her parents.

She had given these ornaments for safe-keeping to her mother-in-law Mohiniben, who died in August 2010. After her death, Hariram and Manish took possession of these gold ornaments. According to Kavita’s complaint, after her repeated requests, the duo promised to return the gold but never did so.

When Hemendra, who owns a cloth shop in Kalupur, took Kavita’s side and asked his father to return the ornaments, Hariram and Manish started threatening the couple.

Kavita also alleged that Manish hid those ornaments at his wife’s parental home and started torturing and beating Hemendra. The couple then moved out of the house three years ago and has been living separately in Usmanpura since then.

Despite repeated attempts when she could not get the ornaments back, Kavita lodged a complaint on Wednesday at Naranpura police station.

In October 2012, Naina Golani, a resident of Juna Vadaj, had lodged a complaint at Naranpura police against Manish, who also claimed to be an astrologer-cum-tantric. She alleged that Manish had taken her gold ornaments worth Rs1 lakh to perform a ritual.
