After IAF's air strikes on Jaish camps, diplomacy in focus

Hours after India confirmed that its air force had successfully conducted air strikes to hit the biggest terror base of United Nations-listed terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed in Pakistan's Balakot, New Delhi was quick to inform world capitals of the developments.

First, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj spoke to five of her counterparts — United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi, Singaporean foreign minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Afghan foreign minister Salahuddin Rabbani and Bangladesh's foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen.

In her calls, she briefed them as to how the Indian strikes were non-military preemptive action against the terror group that has been responsible for many attacks in India.

According to Indian intelligence reports, Jaish was also planning more suicide terror attacks in the country in the aftermath of the Pulwama terror attack.

Earlier in the day, India also briefed foreign envoys in the country, regarding its actions. To that end, foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale briefed envoys of the P5 or the permanent five countries of the United Nations security council, including China, Russia, US, France and UK along with the ASEAN bloc — Brazil, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Kuwait and neighbouring countries like Bhutan, Maldives, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka.

A source said that during the briefing, Gokhale asked the "international community to impress upon Pakistan the need for it to take action to seriously fight terrorism" and the aim of India's pre-emptive action.

Later, speaking outside the MEA, Dean of Diplomatic Corps Hans Dannenberg Castellanos said, "The message was exactly the one conveyed to media, the operation was a very directed one and did not impact any civilians in Pakistan. It did not impact any military installations in Pakistan.. and it was a pre-emptive strike to avoid any terrorist attacks in India, they had credible intelligence that the people who were planning it were in that camp.
