Indian cinema is getting bigger and grander. With each passing year, the tag of India’s most expensive film passes from one mega project to another. A few years ago, it was almost always a Bollywood film that was the biggest Indian film. But Baahubali changed that and since then, it’s almost always been a film from the Tamil and Telugu industries that have broken the record for highest budget for an Indian film. In 2024, the record is to be broken yet again, and this time, the 1000-crore mark will be breached as well

India’s most expensive film with a Rs 1000-crore budget

After the grand success of Baahubali films and RRR, director SS Rajamouli is planning his next starring Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu. The film is being written by veteran screenwriter Vijayendra Prasad, Rajamouli’s father. Recently, in a media interaction, the screenwriter informed that writing has begun on the film and it will be the grandest Indian film ever made. As per an India Today report, the film – tentatively called SSMB29 – is being mounted on a massive budget of Rs 1000 crore, easily the highest ever in Indian cinema history.

How SSMB29 dwarfs other mega Indian films

If the Rs 1000-crore budget is accurate, it would make SSMB29 not just the most expensive Indian film ever made but more expensive than the combined costs of Rajamouli’s previous two films – RRR (Rs 500 crore) and Baahubali 2 (Rs 250 crore). In fact, most of the upcoming pan-India or big-budget Bollywood films pale in comparison. Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 AD will be made on a Rs 600 crore budget and is a distant second. Others like Pushpa 2, Devara, Singham Again, and Fighter all have budgets in the Rs 250-300 crore range as per reports.

What is SSMB29 about?

There are few details about the film at this stage but Vijayendra Prasad did reveal a few key points about the much-anticipated film recently. The writer revealed that unlike Rajamouli’s previous two films, this won’t be a period drama and will be set in the present. He also likened the action adventure to Hollywood franchise Indiana Jones in tone and tenor, with Mahesh Babu seemingly playing an Indy-like character. MM Keeravani has begun work on the music score already. Rajamouli is set to reveal the film’s synopsis at the right time in a press meet. However, given that the film is still in pre-production stage, it may be a long time before that happens. There is no set release window for it as of now.
