Mreenal Deshraj

a painter who
dabbles with various mediums
Actor Mreenal Deshraj, who is seen as the evil Padmini in ‘Doli Saja Ke’ (Sahara One), has an artistic temperament.
The actor has taken up glass-painting and spends several hours - sometimes all night-painting on glass.
Quiz her on what prompted her to take up the brush and she says, “I was feeling a vacuum within me. I wanted to do something that was creatively more satisfying. So I took up glass-painting.” She adds, “I was never academically inclined. I was always good at art and craft in school. However, I didn’t take it up seriously. Despite being good at it, I tended to ignore it. A craving for creative fulfillment forced me to pursue it again.”
Interestingly, her first painting that has boats on a river (see picture below) was done on July 26, 2005 (when Mumbai was hit with floods). “I completed this painting in exactly three days. There was no electricity and neither were phones functioning those few days. I was getting very bored. So I began painting,” she shares.
Mreenal says she first conceives the concept and develops the design before painting. “I take inspiration from things around, which I then express in my work. For example, my painting of a girl is actually taken from the menu card of a five star hotel’s bar.”
Interestingly, Mreenal loves to draw female figures. “Female figures are very beautiful. They inspire me to paint,” says Mreenal adding, “I get so involved in painting that often I sit through the night. At such times, I do not like to be disturbed by my friends or even family members.”
Mreenal has made several paintings and gifted them to her friends and relatives. She has also extended her creativity to pot painting and wine-bottle painting. But she is not looking at retailing them. “I love painting as a hobby. Selling them doesn’t excite me,” Mreenal concludes.
