In the 90s, as Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan were experimenting with more diverse cinema, the Tamil film industry was looking for its next superstar. Many young actors were vying for the spot from Arvind Swamy to Thalapathy Vijay. But among them was one name that was considered the frontrunner as the successor to the stalwarts. This man had everything – successful films, big directors, and a big fan base. Remember Abbas, star of Kadhal Desam?

Born in 1975, Abbas began is career as a teenager undertaking modelling assignments in Bangalore. Kadhir signed him for his 1996 film Kadhal Desam. The film’s success made him an overnight sensation, earning him the tag of ‘heartthrob’. After his next few films failed to work at the box office, Abbas appeared as the antagonist in the Rajinikanth-starrer Padayappa and did a supporting role in Kamal Haasan’s Hey Ram. He then worked alongside Aishwarya Rai, Ajith, and Tabu in Kandukondain Kandukondain, which revived his career. He went on to work in hits like Minnale, Aanandham, and Pammal K. Sambandam.

How Abbas’ career declined

A Hindi film opposite Bipasha Basu was shelved. After 2014, as he worked in TV shows, he found his interest in acting was fading and he quit acting and moved to New Zealand. Some reports said that bad financial decisions led him to be bankrupt there.
