The initial autopsy report of Dalit student of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Muthu Krishnan has revealed that his death was caused due to “hanging” but the Delhi Police have registered a case of abetment to suicide to probe if he was driven to take the extreme step due to any discrimination or atrocity.

The family had suspected foul play, rejecting the theory that Krishnan committed suicide as he was suffering from depression.

“Prima facie it’s a case of suicide by hanging. However it’s a matter of investigation about the circumstances in which the deceased has committed suicide,” said sources, citing the initial autopsy report conducted by a five-member team of doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

“No specific abnormal smell was present. Dribbling of saliva was present on the cheeks of the deceased which is a sign of ante-mortem injuries,” the report added, sources said.

The entire autopsy process was video-graphed and photographed.

“We have registered a case of abetment to suicide and the relevant section of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act. The case has been registered against unknown persons,” said DCP (South) Ishwar Singh.

Krishnan, a first-year M phil student of JNU had allegedly committed suicide at his friend’s house in South Delhi’s Munirka Vihar on Monday. His body was flown to Chennai at around 8.45pm. It was later sent to Salem. A group of students from JNU also accompanied the body to the airport.

Krishnan’s autopsy was deferred on Tuesday after his family refused to give consent demanding the presence of a “neutral” forensic expert from Tamil Nadu and filing of an FIR under the SC/ST Act.

The family had also rejected the police theory that Krishnan was depressed and have demanded an investigation conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

“My son was very brave. He would not have committed suicide. His death has taken place under mysterious circumstances and a thorough probe should be done,” Krishnan’s father Jeevanandam had said on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, Union Minister of Commerce Nirmala Sithraman, along with Minister of State for Shipping, Pon Radhakrishnan, and a group of students reached AIIMS mortuary where Krishnan’s body was kept and demanded an FIR in the case. Hours later, Delhi Police filed a case of abetment of suicide in the matter.

Krishnan, who was born in a Dalit family of Salem district in Tamil Nadu, was a bright student. He completed his masters from University of Hyderabad in 2015 before joining M Phil in JNU.

While he did not leave any suicide note, his last Facebook post was about “discriminatory” admission policy in JNU. “There is no equality in MPhil/PhD. Admission, there is no equality in viva voce, there is only denial of equality, denying Professor Sukhadeo Thorat recommendation, denying students protest places in ad-block, denying the education of the marginals. When equality is denied, everything is denied,” Krishnan wrote in his Facebook post dated March 10.
