A 30-year-old gym owner was stabbed to death at a restro-bar in west Delhi's Punjabi Bagh area late on Sunday when his friends demanded the Disc Jockey (DJ) to play a Punjabi song instead of the Hindi songs he was playing. The incident happened at Raftaar club, where he was attending a birthday party of one his friends. A woman suffered injuries on her head when a beer bottle was hurled at her during the brawl.

The deceased, Vijay Deep, was a resident of Vishnu Garden area, where he also owned a gymnasium. Around 10 pm, Deep and nine others, including the woman, reached Raftaar bar to celebrate his friend and client Ishu Sondh's birthday. Around midnight, a scuffle broke out between the group and DJ Deepak Bisht.

According to Tejinder Singh, on whose complaint a case was registered, they asked Bisht to play a Punjabi song instead of Hindi songs, but he refused. Later, a fight broke out — the group on one side and Bisht, backed by bouncers and staff of the bar, on the other. When Deep, who had gone to the washroom, returned, the fight had turned violent, and a laptop and the DJ console were damaged as well. Deep was trying to pacify the two groups when he was stabbed, said Singh.

"The staff members were supporting the DJ, and after the incident they switched off the power supply, because of which the lift wasn't working. We carried Deep down three floors and took him to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival," said Singh.

While Deep was being taken down the staircase a beer bottle was hurled at their friend Harmeet Kaur. Kaur has stitches on her forehead and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

The police received a call from the bar manager at 12:06 am, but by the police reached the spot, Deep was already moved to the hospital.

"We have arrested the accused, Deepak Bisht, and recovered the murder weapon, a knife. Bisht, who hails from Uttrakhand, has been residing in Burari area of North Delhi," said Vijay Kumar, DCP, West.

Talking to DNA, Deep's father said: since it was Sunday, the gym was shut and Deep left home around 8.30 pm for a birthday party. Around 11.30 pm, when I was about to go to bed, my younger son Vishwajeet received a call from Vijay's friend informing him about a fight."

Deep's body was handed over to the family after the post-mortem. A senior doctor said Deep was first stabbed in the hand and then in the abdomen with a kitchen knife; the abdomen stab proved fatal. "Death due to hemorrhagic shock resulting from abdominal injuries caused by sharp-edged, single weapon," concluded his autopsy report.
