Troubles for Tamil Nadu Premier League are not looking to end after police sources say they discovered information about a possible betting racket while investigating the suicide of former Indian national cricketer and TNPL team owner VB Chandrasekhar.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had already initiated an enquiry over the alleged corruption in TNPL, Anti Corruption Unit's (ACU) chief Ajeet Singh confirmed on Monday.

Now, police say that while they were investigating some of VB’s close friends and cricketers, talks about the betting racket came to light, said a report in The Times of India.

“Though those were not directly related to the suicide case, we recorded some of the important facts and passed on to our colleagues in Mumbai and Delhi,” a senior police officer was quoted as saying.

The 57-year-old VB died last month in what was suspected to be suicide prompted by worries over debt. He owned VB Kanchi Veerans team and also ran a cricket academy, VB’s Nest, in Velachery.

There have been reports of an unknown person approaching some of the players during the league and the players then complained to the ACU to deal with the matter.

"Yes, some of the players have approached us and based on their statements, we have initiated an enquiry. We have also recorded their statement on how and when they received messages from the unknown person. Actually, there was a WhatsApp message that was sent by some unknown people and then the players approached ACU. It can be anyone but we are sure that there is no international player involved," Ajeet Singh told ANI.

The TNPL, owned by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, started in 2016 and features eight franchises.
