Tamim Iqbal was ruled out of Asia Cup 2018 with a broken wrist during the opening match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka on Saturday in Dubai.

While attempting to pull off Suranga Lakmal’s ball, Tamim was struck on his left wrist in the second over of the day. The Bangladeshi batsmen immediately called for a physiotherapist before he was retired hurt on two runs off three balls.

Tamim was later taken to a hospital and scans there revealed a crack on the outside of his index finger.

However, to everyone’s surprise, when Bangladesh lost their ninth wicket, just two hours after discovering about the fracture, Tamim walked out to bat with Mushfiqur Rahim. That bold decision helped Bangladesh add 32 crucial runs for the last wicket as Mushfiqur finished with a heroic 144 and his side posted a total of 261.

Tamim, who faced just one delivery, positioned his hand as if in a sling. He had four fingers from his left gloves popping out to support a special padding on the glove. Although he did not score any runs then, but his decision to come back showed his temperament and pride.

Bangladesh Chief Selector Minhajul Abedin said, "We took him to the hospital only because it was a serious injury and not just mere bruising, he was in some pain obviously and it wouldn't have been prudent to continue batting."

The 29-year-old is Bangladesh's all-time leading run-scorer and centurion in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and his absence will come as a significant blow to the team's hopes in the Asia Cup 2018.

It is understood that Tamim will mostly return to Bangladesh on Sunday and Nazmul Hossain Shanto, the backup batsman, will likely replace him for Bangladesh's second game against Afghanistan on Thursaday.

However, Shanto, too, is recovering from a finger injury, but was named 12th man against Sri Lanka so that showed that the injury may not be serious.
