According to a list prepared by EdelGive Foundation and Hurun Report, Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the founder of Tata Group, has emerged as the mot charitable man in the world in the last century. Jamsetji Tata has been named as the biggest philanthropist of the world as he has donated USD 102.4 billion (Rs 829734 crore). The second place is occupied by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his now-estranged wife Melinda, who have donated USD 74.6 billion. Legend investor Warren Buffet is at third place with USD 37.4 billion, followed by George Soros (USD 34.8 billion) and John D Rockefeller (USD 26.8 billion) respectively. The list was released in 2021.

It is to be noted that the philanthropists are ranked on the basis of Total Philanthropic Value, which has been calculated after adjusting the value of the assets for inflation.

Jamsetji Tata had given maximum donation in the education and healthcare sectors. According to reports, Jamsetji Tata started his charitable works in 1892. Besides Tata, the only other India who is in the list of Top 50 global philanthropists is Wipro founder Azim Premji, who has donated USD 22 billion. Azim Premji has given a whopping 67 per cent of Wipro shares to the Azim Premji Endowment fund. The Azim Premji Foundation was founded in 2001 and it supports the education in government schools in rural areas.

Jamsetji Tata breathed his last in 1904 and Tata Group Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata now takes care of the philanthropic activities of the Tata Group. "Many of the philanthropists made the donation in the second generation rather than the first, such as the story of the Ford Foundation, which was set up by the son of Henry Ford," Rupert Hoogewerf, Chairman and Chief Researcher of Hurun Report, said.

It is surprising that the names of the world’s richest man Elon Musk and former world’s richest man Jeff Bezos were missing from the list. “It is surprising that Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk have not made the cut in this list. The stories of the world’s biggest philanthropists of the last century tells the story of modern philanthropy. The legacies of the world’s earliest billionaires such as Carnegie and Rockefeller, through to the Bill Gates and Warren Buffett’s of today, show how wealth created has been redistributed,” said Hoogewerf said. In the top 50, the US is on top with 39 billionaires, followed by the UK with five, China three, India two and Portugal and Switzerland one each.
