Meet BCom grad who leads Rs 84,194 crore govt company

Sandeep Kumar Gupta is the Chairman and Managing Director, GAIL (India) limited. It is a central public sector undertaking (PSU) which comes under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India.

Gupta joined the PSU in October 2022. Before this, he worked in Indian Oil Corporation Limited as Director (Finance) for over three years. He joined Indian Oil in 1988 as an Accounts Officer to Executive Director (Corporate Finance).

Currently, he is leading GAIL which has a market capitalisation of Rs 84,194 crore as of September 8, 2023. The share price of the government-owned company was Rs 128 on NSE. GAIL was incorporated in August 1984.

Gupta holds a bachelor's degree in Commerce from Christ Church College, Kanpur. He is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. He has wide experience of over 34 years in the oil and gas industry. He held different positions in Indian Oil Corporate Office, Refineries Head Office and Refineries at Guwahati, Baroda and Mathura.

He has received training through renowned institutions like IIM Calcutta, University of Maryland, Washington, Harvard Business School, XLRI Jamshedpur and IIM Ahmedabad. He is also the Chairman of the Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE) for the year 2023-25. It is an apex professional organization representing the Central Government Public Enterprises.
