After the success of The Kashmir Files last year, filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri is now gearing up for the release of his next – The Vaccine War. The film tells the story of how women scientists in India helped develop the Covid-19 vaccine during the pandemic. In an exclusive chat with DNA, the filmmaker spoke about the significance of the film and why he felt it was necessary to invest in it.

In previous interviews, Agnihotri has said that he and wife Pallavi Joshi invested all they earned from The Kashmir Files into The Vaccine War. “My idea was to use our money to invest in those kinds of films that can help build a new filmmaking tradition and a new independent cinema,” he explains why he chose to do that.

The director says that many in the industry, who earn more than him, will not invest in a film like this. He says, “There are so many people whose films do business of Rs 1000 crore, all the producers, directors, superstars, the badshahs and kings of Bollywood. These people will never even invest 10 paisa in a film like this.”

Talking about the film’s importance and relevance, Agnihotri adds, “Today, India has created the safest vaccine in the world and created such monopoly. This vaccine is the biggest scientific achievement in the history of India. And our women scientists have created it. These people talk sweet about women empowerment in interviews but when it comes to this subject, they would say ‘vaccine ki film kaun dekhega, auraton ki filmein kaun dekhta hai (who will watch a film on vaccines, nobody watches women oriented films today). But we did it. Pallavi and I invested money and two years of our life in it. This is what we are doing.”

Starring Nana Patekar, Pallavi Joshi, Anupam Kher, Raima Sen, and Sapthami Gowda, The Vaccine War will be releasing in theatres on September 28.
