Sunny Deol is currently enjoying positive response and praise for his recent release, Gadar 2. In 1993, the actor stole the show with his small yet impactful appearance in the movie Damini which garnered a lot of praise. However, do you know that he was not the first choice for this role?

Sunny Deol essayed the role of Damini’s lawyer in the 1993 hit and gained heaps of praise for his role in the movie. However, the director of the film, Rajkumar Santoshi who also worked with Sunny before in Ghayal, offered the role first to Om Puri.

However, Om Puri rejected the offer due to some misunderstanding. Rajkumar Santoshi recently revealed the same in an interview with Bollywood Hungama and said, “Yes, we had the thought of bringing in Om Puri and showing his confrontation with Amrish Puri. Sunny had become a very big hero after Ghayal (1990). He was supposed to do another action-packed film, Ghatak (1996), with me. And the character in Damini comes in reel no 12. Hence, we thought that instead of Sunny, we should bring in Om Puri. However, the producer and Om Puri’s secretary had some misunderstandings over the fees. Then I thought of trying Sunny. And he came on board gladly.”

Helmed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the 1993 hit Damini starred Meenakshi Seshadri, Amrish Puri, Rishi Kapoor, and Paresh Rawal among others. Though Sunny Deol's role as a lawyer was only in the second half of the movie, the actor overshadowed all the actors with his strong and electrifying performance.

Sunny Deol as Govind game some iconic dialogues like “Yeh dhai kilo ka haath jab kisi pe padhta hai toh vo uthta nahi uth jaata hai.” And “tareekh pe tareekh”. The film was applauded for tackling a sensitive issue.

Meanwhile, Sunny Deol is back to entertain his audience with his performance as Tara Singh in Gadar 2. Helmed by Anil Sharma, the movie also stars Ameesha Patel as Sakina and Utkarsh Sharma as Charanjeet along with Manish Wadhwa, Simrat Kaur, Luv Sinha, and others in key roles.

The film has hit the theatres today (August 11) and despite clashing with Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2, the movie is garnering immense love from the audience and is expected to earn Rs 35 crore on day 1 of its release.
