Time and again, there have been a lot of debates and discussions about the existence of casting couch in Bollywood. While some admit that it does exist, others claim to have never encountered anything like that. Many talk about the cases of casting couch and sexual harassment in hushed voices but it's rare that somebody gathers up the courage to raise their voice against it.
Soon after the Harvey Weinstein scandal in Hollywood came to light, some of the Bollywood actors too came out and spoke about casting couch, sexual harassment and other vices in the industry. In her recent interaction with Bombay Times, Ileana D'Cruz opened up about why not many speak up against it. She was quoted as saying, "It might sound cowardly, but I do agree that if one speaks out about the casting couch, it will end their career."
Ileana went on to narrate the details of an incident about which she came to know while working in the South industry. She shared with the daily, "Years ago, a junior artiste down South, who was being propositioned by a big producer, sought my advice on how to deal with it. I told her that it’s something that I couldn’t decide for her. It is her decision and that nobody could force it on her. Many people have done it and it’s up to her whether she wants to go ahead and do it or not. As far as exploitation and harassment is concerned, I wouldn’t stand for it."
She further added that in case an A-list actor is accused of something like casting couch or sexual harassment, then it'll require a lot of people to come forward and support it, including A-list actresses and other actors. Only then some difference can be made. "Actors in this country are worshiped. So it will take many voices for people to acknowledge that huge stars could have such an ugly side. I can’t watch Kevin Spacey’s show anymore, though I have loved it earlier because he has been accused of harassment. It disgusts me as a person,” she said.
