Having appeared at Cannes Film Festival for 16 times, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is in all rights a Cannes veteran
The annual Festival de Cannes is known to be one of the most glamorous and prestigious international film festivals. It has always been at the forefront of celebrating cinema (and fashion) and India has always been at the heart of it. The nation's Cannes journey began with Chetan Anand’s Neecha Nagar which won the Grand Prix award in 1946. The 1950s is considered a glorious period in India's Cannes history. But, it was mostly short films and regional cinema that made noise in the international circuits as the Hindi film industry or Bollywood took it's own sweet time to make its grand debut.
It was only in 2002 when for the first time a mainstream commercial Hindi film made it to the fest. It was Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit, that broke Bollywood's dry spell at Cannes. And since then the former Miss World has remained the poster girl of Cannes for us Indians. The actress also became the first Indian-origin woman to be a part of the International Jury in 2003.
Reminiscing her first Cannes experience, Aishwarya earlier said in an interview: "We attended the festival not just as artists but as proud representatives of Indian cinema, and showcasing a film that meant so much to us. The kind of reception we got for the movie was truly overwhelming and I will cherish it all my life."
“It wasn’t for an individual but the entire team of Devdas and it meant a lot to us because it was quite unexpected. Because we were showcasing our film and getting that kind of reception that we did was truly overwhelming,” she added.
“So the first makes it so memorable, imagine to have first experience and one like that… So that is something and I don’t think anyone in the world can take away from us, and that is something that will always make us feel thankful for having that experience for us to cherish and recount forever,” she said.
