A promising career in football met with a tragic end as Anil Rodrigues, 19, a native of Shimoga and a student of the second pre-university course there, died on Thursday. On August 22, Rodrigues was hit by a car as he was getting across the Vidyanagar Cross on the national highway connecting to the Bengaluru International Airport. He was on his way to have a cup of tea with an uncle.
Rodrigues struggled for life at a private hospital in Langford Gardens and breathed his last on Thursday morning.
Rodrigues, whom his coach described as a talented goalkeeper with a promising future, had joined the A-division league last year.
Rodrigues was in the city, training at the Sri Jayaprakash Narayan National Youth Training Centre, Vidyanagar, off Bellary Road. He was living at the government-run sports hostel there. His uncle was in the city on August 22, and Rodrigues had spent time with him. Just before returning to the hostel, Rodrigues and his uncle, accompanied by a friend, had planned to stop for tea at a roadside hotel. His uncle and friend had already got across the road; they waited for Rodrigues to join them. That was not to be.
Rodrigues was rushed to Nimhans after the accident, but taken to a private hospital later as there was a problem with equipment at Nimhans at the time. The car involved in the accident sped away, but onlookers were able to note down the registration number. An investigation is in progress.
State sports minister Goolihatti Shekar announced compensation of Rs1.5 lakh to the footballer’s family. The minister visited the bereaved family at hospital and later observed one-minute silence during a press conference.
