Police on Saturday arrested a 39-year-old man who threw acid on his wife.

The victim Gouramma, 35, a resident of Mutturayanagar in Kengeri, suffered burns on face, neck, hands and shoulder. She is currently undergoing treatment in Shreya Hospital in Kengeri.

The accused, Kumar, a painter, and Gouramma, a garments factory worker, were married for 17 years.

The couple had four children. However, five years ago, Gouramma left the house without informing anybody, as she was tired of her husband’s frequent taunts.

Since then, the couple have been living separately. On Saturday, Kumar met his wife near the garments factory where she was working.

He told her to give him a second chance so that they could start life afresh.

Gouramma initially refused. However, Kumar successfully persuaded her.

He told her that he has rented out a new house in Devagiri and invited her to stay with him.

After reaching the house, the couple once again got into an argument. In a fit of rage, Kumar threw acid on her.

Neighbours who heard Gouramma's scream rushed to her rescue and took her to the hospital. They also immediately alerted the police.

Gouramma is out of risk, Kengeri police said.

Pre-planned attack
Police said the acid attack on his wife was pre-planned, as Kumar suspected that his wife had an illicit affair with another man.

When police interrogated Kumar, he shed light on Gouramma's infidelity.

He told police that his wife was having an extramarital relationship with another man. This led to her leaving home five years ago. Because of this, Kumar had to endure lot of hardships.

He left his children in four different ashrams as he was unable to take care of them.

Kumar told police that he wanted to teach his wife a lesson and hence planned to squirt acid on her.
