On Saturday, the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested two people in connection with the 100kg heroin seized from a boat off the Porbandar coast on March 27, 2019, in which nine Iranian nationals were also arrested from the boat during the joint operation of ATS, the Coast Guard and the Marine Task Force.

The two accused were identified as Mohammad Abdul Salaam Kunni, a resident of Kasargod in Kerala and Niyamat Khan Ahmedzai, a resident of Logar Province in Afghanistan.

As per senior ATS official, during the interrogation of the nine Iranian nationals, it was revealed that the consignment was supposed to be received by an Indian fishing boat belonging to a person identified as Badruddin Shaikh (a resident of Mumbai) from Porbandar.

The consignment was later taken to Delhi where the Afghani national Niyamat Khan would have received it and it was supposed to be handed over to Abdul Salaam Kunni. He was going to take it to Chennai and Malappuram, to be further smuggled to Gulf countries from various ports and airports in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The investigation revealed that in past also the accused had smuggled the consignment to India from different coasts and had delivered the consignment to other countries. As per officials, in past three times, the drug consignment was smuggled to India, but they had used some other ports to get inside the Indian coasts.

The investigation also revealed that Ahmedzai was involved with Afghan drug mafia, in December 2018 he had come to India on a medical visa and was staying in Delhi. He was instructed by an Afghan drug mafia identified as Haji Nadar to hand over the consignment to Kunni, for the entire process was paid Rs11lakh by Nadar.

Right now, officials have brought Badruddin Shaikh for questioning, while two more accused from Porbandar, who were supposed to change the consignment to the Indian boat are also wanted and search for them is on.
