Sikhs in Ahmedabad celebrated the festival of Baisakhi with traditional fervour and joy on Saturday at the Town Hall. The event was inaugurated by mayor Asit Vora, who gave a musical start to the evening by singing Bollywood song ‘kabhi kabhi mere dil mein…’.

The event also saw the recitation of Gurbani kirtans (sacred hymns) by a group of religious preachers, specially invited from Punjab to recite the hymns as a dedication to Guru Gobind Singh.

On the occasion, Narinder Singh Suri, the event organiser, talked about creating the atmosphere of Punjab in Ahmedabad. He said, “This event is a way to promote our culture and traditions among the youth of our community. We have tried to recreate the feeling of Baisakhi celebrations home, by inviting artistes from Punjab.”

Folk songs in Punjabi music were performed as a dedication to Bhagat Singh, praising the spirit he showed for the country. Suri said, “The songs and music here depict the culture and tradition we follow back in Punjab and the way Baisakhi is celebrated in every village with gaiety.”

“We also had traditional songs in the event as they have been forgotten by the new generation.

Songs on marriage and girls enjoying with friends were sung along to the tunes belted out in traditional music,” Suri added.

Judges of a famous reality show of Punjab, Ramesh Kumar and Dimple Siddiqui, were invited to perform. Roop Siddiqui, a popular Punjabi artiste, sang, ‘Sajjre Challe Mukhlave’ even as the audience joined with clapping.

Another organiser, Jasveer Singh, talked on how they tried to create the essence of Punjab through this programme, by even getting it anchored in Punjabi! Later, a city-based group of boys dressed in colourful attire performed a bhangra which was followed by an enthralling performance of gidda by a group of Punjabi suit-clad girls.

The evening concluded with a bhangra by the Khalsa group from Punjab. Sikhs and Punjabis from Vadodara, Mehsana and other neighbouring cities were invited to celebrate the festival.
