The 20-year-old Abasaheb Garware College student is the only child of Pradip Shamsundar Beldar, an officer working with water supply department of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), and Ujjwala, a homemaker.

Speaking to dna, Swapnil and his mother said that he completed primary and high school education at Muktangan English School and scored 87% in SSC exam.

An avid badminton player and dancer, Swapnil complained of fatigue and breathing problems while climbing the stairs during his standard X mid-term exam. It became difficult for him to walk and orthopaedic surgeons said that he has developed knock knees.

After tests and consulting doctors, the Beldars came to know that their son’s both kidneys were shrinking.

Swapnil underwent 137 cycles of dialysis in almost 15 months before undergoing the transplant surgery. Smita Siddha, his maternal aunt, donated her kidney to Swapnil and both are leading a normal life. He was treated by nephrologist Dr Atul Sajgure and Dr Jaideep Date performed the surgery, Ujjwala said.

During the 15 months of dialysis, Swapnil was treated for pneumonia and was even operated upon for a tuberculosis neck tumor. He used to daily take 30-40 tablets after Hepatitis C infection, Ujjwala said.

Post-operation

Swapnil was confined to his room for six months for fear of getting infected.

He was exempted from attending classes by college authorities and attended private tuition for two years (standard XI, XII).

He only attended college practicals and lectures on electronics, the subject in which he wants to pursue a career.
