Mohun Bagan defeated East Bengal 2-1 in the much-awaited Kolkata derby in the I-League on Sunday (January 19) before the Mariners' merge with Indian Super League (ISL) franchise ATK from next season.

However, the limited was stolen by numerous anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) tifos at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium, brought in by the fans.

Severe protests have erupted in various parts of the country ever since the central government passed the contentious act, which grants Indian citizenship to refugees belonging to the Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsi, and Jain communities from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.

All the tifos were written in Bengali. One of them read, "Rakta Diye Kina Mati, Kagaz Diye Noy. This land was bought with blood – not documents."

Another display read: “You Bangal, where are the NRC papers”, as Bantul responds with “go away”.

Several civil society members and activists have stated that the act discriminates against Muslims, a claim which has been refuted by the Centre, which puts that the act will grant long-deserved citizenship to refugees who have faced religious persecution in these neighbouring countries.

This is one of the most talked-about topics in India right now with top sports personalities like the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, Team India head coach Ravi Shashti and numerous others sharing their thought on the NRC and CAA topic.

“My message will be to maintain peace. I will not go into the political issues of it because I have not actually read the bill," Ganguly said last month on the topic of CAA.

"I do not think it is appropriate to make any comment before understanding but maintain peace and harmony."

"If there are issues, the concerned people will be available to address it. For me, everyone's happiness is important,” he added.
