Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was not lucky but his wife was.

Singh witnessed the 70-minute hockey clash between India and Australia for the gold medal at the Dhyan Chand stadium but the men-in-blue disappointed him after they were drubbed 0-8 by the mighty Kookaburras.

However, his wife Gursharan Kaur turned out to be lucky as she witnessed ace shuttler Saina Nehwal rising from ashes to defeat Malaysian Mew Choo Wong in a breathtaking women singles final to not only clinch a gold but to take the country to the second position in the medals tally at the last minute.

At the packed Siri Fort Sports Complex, Saina defeated Wong to earn the yellow metal as the crowd chanted "Sainaaa....Sainaaa". The Indian shuttler's mother Usha Nehwal was also present at the stadium to witness her daughter's renmarkable 19-21 23-21 21-13 victory.

Earlier, a battery of political heavyweights including Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and home minister P Chidambaram along with former Olympians Zafar Iqbal and others to egg on the hockey team who were facing Australia in the summit clash.

They however had to be contend with only a silver as the World Champions thrashed India 8-0.
