Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal came to the rescue after his home island Mallorca was hit by flash floods. Rafa has donated a million euros ($1.15 million) to the victims, local authorities announced on Thursday.

A total of 13 people were killed after the floods hit Mallorca on October 9. "We know about his affection and humanity, which is as great as his talent and his results and he has shown that both on and off the court," the local government said in a statement.

The local government published a video, in which mayor Mateu Puigros can be seen appreciating Nadal and how he donated the money despite being unable to take part in a charity exhibition match which was aimed to help the people affected by the disaster.

The match which was scheduled for December 7 was suspended as Rafa had to undergo surgery on his right ankle in early November.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion had also joined the clean-up operations and had opened up his academy to help the victims.
