Watch Saturn at its best tomorrow night

Watch Saturn in all its glory on April 28 when the planet with the rings makes its closest approach to Earth this year. The planet will appear bigger and brighter than at any other time in 2013. Astronomers call this event “an opposition,” because Saturn will be opposite the Sun in the skies of the Earth. The planet rises at sunset, soars almost overhead at midnight and stays up all night long.

Amit Purandare, director of Aastronomica Club, Pune said, “The Saturn rings will be opening between 15 to 19 degrees and it will be in full tilt. The planet will be visible in the sky throughout the night. People can study the planet more closely.” He said, “Aastronomica Club in Pune will be showing this planet with the help of a telescope at Jnana Prabodhini School in Sadashiv Peth between 9.15 pm and 10.15 pm.”

Saturn will be at a distance of around 1.3 billion km from Earth. It is the second largest planet in the solar system. Saturn is a gas giant with an average radius about nine times that of Earth, but only one-eighth the average density of Earth.
