The Mumbai Crime Branch officials on Sunday arrested two persons who allegedly assaulted a car driver and robbed his vehicle. Investigations revealed that the arrested duo, identified as Pratish Prajapati, 19 and Kishore Lohar, 23, had robbed the vehicle since they wanted to ferry illicit liquor to Silvassa and Damam.

According to the police, on October 30, Pratish had visited Suvidha Travels in Andheri (E) and hired a Chevrolet Tavera to go to Surat. Travel agency driver Prashant Ore, 20, reached Dindoshi, the pick-up point, with the vehicle around 11pm.

“Pratish and Kishore, both natives of Gujarat, then started their journey. On reaching Talasari, one of the two stopped the car on the pretext of going to the loo. The duo then assaulted Prashant and threatened him with a revolver and a knife. They threw him out of the vehicle and sped off,” said Rakesh Maria, joint commissioner of police (crime).

After receiving information, the Bandra Crime Branch unit arrested the duo at Khar Road station. The police recovered the stolen Tavera and seized two knives, a toy gun, a country-made revolver and a packet containing live cartridges and two mobile phones.

“Investigations revealed that the two were working for a group involved in Daru passing. The group was instrumental in smuggling illicit liquor made in parts of Gujarat to Silvassa and Daman. They chose Mumbai to steal vehicles to ferry the liquor.

The gang used to change the number plates of the vehicles stolen by them,” said Maria.
Explaining the function of Daru passing, Maria said, “A biker would lead the vehicle containing illicit liquor by the group. If there was a police nakabandi on the way, the biker would alert the group following him.”

The duo has been handed over to Dindoshi police for further investigations.
