The common mobility card (CMC) project for cashless travel in Pune has been delayed, as the local authorities are yet to receive guidelines from the Centre on how to implement it.

The Union government has decided to introduce One India Card for commuters using different modes of transport. The Union ministry of urban development sent directives to the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations in September, directing them to implement the scheme.

Under the CMC project, a commuter would get a smart card providing a common fare collection system across different operators (both public and private) and different modes of public transport as an integrated approach.

The CMC is envisaged for use across public transport systems like buses and metro railways initially, and later on extended to trains, autorickshaws and taxis, as well as for parking.

The Pune divisional commissioner, Dilip Band, who is also chief managing director of the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan
Mahamandal Limited (PMPML), is handling the project in Pune.

“We have agreed in principle to implement the project in both Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. But we are unable to launch the scheme in November, as we had planned, since we are yet to receive guidelines on how to go about the project,” he added.

Municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade said the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had received the proposal from the Union government, but as there is a dedicated company for public transport, they handed over the work to the PMPML.

Band said the CMCs would spare passengers the hassles of carrying cash and small change required for travel. The CMC can be recharged as per requirement and will bring more transparency in ticketing.
