Workers in the information technology (IT) sector are the Shiv Sena’s newest recruits.

Following several unsuccessful attempts by various trade unions to form a cohesive union for IT employees, the Sena's new venture, Shiv Mahiti Ani Tantradyan Sena (SMTS) will soon take up this task.

“There are a number of problems faced by IT employees, such as job insecurity, salary problems, safety of women, etc," said Amit Chivilkar, SMTS founding member. "No employee union has been formed in this field. We are not planning to work in the IT field as a union, but as a platform for these employees to address their issues."

Software professionals and call centre employees will be the main targets of the SMTS.

Forming a union among IT professionals has been a tough task for most major parties and unions owing to the high attrition rates among employees, long working hours, and strict company regulations.

The SMTS, which has been launched to promote the Sena's activities through the internet, is using social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Orkut to reach out to young netizens.

“Our aim is to popularise the party’s activities by using modern technology to reach out to internet users and promote the party’s campaigns," said Chivilkar. "At the same time, we will be taking up issues related to the IT sector.”

The SMTS will also be involved in activities such as developing software and websites for the party’s use.

Being a youth-oriented organisation, the SMTS will work with the newly launched Yuva Sena, which is headed by Aditya Thackeray, son of Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray.

Currently, the SMTS is collecting details to develop a website on the struggle of the Marathi-speaking people in the Belgaum region.

“We travelled in the area and talked to people, both Marathis and Kannadigas, asking them what they want. We saw the discrimination faced by Marathis in that area and have submitted our report to executive president Uddhav Thackeray,” said Chivilkar.
