Almost four months since Maharashtra State Forest department initiated one of its biggest operations to rescue two cubs of Tigress T1 aka Avni and even succeeded in trapping a female cub, while the male cub managed to escape- the operation at Pandharkawada in Amravati has now been completely scaled down.

Tigress T1 was shot dead on November 2, by Asghar, son of controversial Hyderabad-based hunter Nawab Shafath Ali Khan. The forest department initiated the search for the two cubs and it was only after 13 days (on November 15) that the patrolling team got the first glimpse of these cubs. On December 22, the female cub was trapped and shifted to an enclosure at Pench Tiger Reserve, while the male managed to escape.

"While earlier there was a team of around 150 people stationed at Pandharkawada, it has now been brought down to just 30. The focus, which was earlier was on trapping the cub, is now on monitoring its movement and ensuring that there is no harm to human life in a conflict. The authorities are making people aware about the same too," said Sunil Limaye, additional principal chief conservator of forest (APCCF). He added that they are trying to find and trap the male cub.

Limaye added that the year old male cub was still hunting and consuming baits tied around the area by the department and there have been no evidences found of it hunting free ranging animals yet.

Meanwhile the female tigress (PK T1-C1) who is currently in the Titralmangi enclosure in Pench Tiger Reserve was being continuously monitored through CCTV. "It has even killed a spotted deer introduced in the enclosure. This is a good sign and all the protocol of National Tiger Conservation Authourity (NTCA) was being followed by the department," informed another senior official.
