For the last three days, Mumbra residents have been facing power cuts for seven to 12 of the 24 hours in a day. Other than causing discomfort, this has upset resident's harmony, health and studies.

Since Monday, Parvez Khan and his mother, wife and two children, have been waking up at 5.30 am. They are not early risers, but they are 'powerless' in the situation.

"There is no electricity in our area from 5.30 am to 10.30 am," said Khan, who resides in Amrutnagar area of the far central suburb. "Our seven-year-old inverter is on the verge of breakdown." His kids have been showing up at school sleep-deprived. When they get back home, another power cut await them — from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm.

Abdul Salam Malik, from Mumbra, said, "Our kids have their first-semester exams later this month and they can't study in peace."

"My parents have high blood pressure and heart ailment. Everyone is deprived of sleep and patience is low. This is sparking skirmishes and petty arguments," he said.

Small enterprises are also suffering Wasi Ahmed Khan, who has a fabrication business and two units of industrial equipment, said, "Our work is time-based. If I fail to adhere to the deadline, I have to pay penalty to the client, and also pay my 15 workers wages even when they do not work due to power failure."

Dairy products are rotting in stores. "Milk packets are spoiling quickly. The supplier does not pay us for packets ruined due to lack of refrigeration," he said.

MSEDCL, the power distributor in the region, said October heat has spiked demand in Thane. "We are trying to find a solution to the problem," said a spokesperson.
