In a first in the world for a Metro bridge, Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro's cable-stayed structure over the Western Express Highway now has real-time sensors to monitor its structural health.

This bridge is Asia's tallest cable-stayed bridge. Cable stay is a design wherein the bridge is suspended with the help of cables, like the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The real-time advanced structural health monitoring of cable-stayed bridge has been installed by a Swiss firm, Mageba. With the help of 25 electronic sensors installed at various spots on the bridge, several recordings will be available, such as displacement sensors, inclinometers, tri-axle accelerometers, swings, structural temperatures, wind direction vis-a-vis its velocity, and deflections.

As this is Asia's highest cable-stayed bridge with 39 metres high pylon and 19-metre high bridge deck, there is a need to monitor its health. Daily around 370 Metro trips are made on this bridge, and on certain days, like during monsoon, high wind velocity makes overall conditions tougher.

There are also plans to have the same system on the cable-stayed bridge across the Yamuna river at Wazirabad, Delhi. Even the Bandra-Worli Sea Link has a similar structural health monitoring system, but it doesn't have a real-time monitoring feature and readings are taken periodically and manually.

With a cost of Rs 2.5 crore, the system has a shelf life of a decade. If the structural parameters, vibrational behaviour and frequencies are within the threshold, a usual report will be generated through cloud storage system, "or else an email and an SMS will be sent to raise alarm", said a Mumbai Metro One Private Limited official.

After a series of calibration tests last month, the system was commissioned on Friday, with a permanent control room positioned at Western Express Highway station.
