A 30-year-old woman pillion rider was crushed to death under the wheels of a BEST bus near Jankalyan Nagar in Malad west. The Malad Police arrested the bus driver for causing death due to negligence. The woman was with her male friend and had gone for a ride in Marve.

According to police, Ajinkya Shetye, 26, a resident of Malad, was riding his two-wheeler with his friend Varsha Shinde as a pillion rider. The bus was driven by Arvind Mohite on the Jankalyan Nagar towards Malad station. On Thursday at around 10.15 am, the bus and the biker were on the same lane when another two-wheeler crashed into Shetye's bike. Shetye lost control over the bike leading to Shinde's fall, who was crushed under the rear wheels of the bus.

Shetye said, "It was the two wheeler's fault that he came head on infront of me, which led to the collision and further to the accident. I am unable to get over the accident. I have lost a dear friend of mine."

Vijay Naik, the investigation officer from Malad Police Station, said, "The victim was rushed to Shatabdi Hospital for treatment but she was declared dead before admission. We have handed over the body to the husband."

A case has been registered under sections 304 (A) (causing death due to negligence), 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC and under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act," said Suresh Shinde, assistant commissioner of police (Goregaon division) of Mumbai Police.
