Lost her vision to a deadly disease, still aced exams

Hetal got tuberculosis when she was in Class 9. As a result of this deadly, sometimes fatal disease, she partially lost her vision due to a tumour in her right eye. However, the student overcame all odds and studied day and night to ensure that she passed the boards. “With my condition, I found it difficult to study with the light around me,” said Bhatia whose father is an auto driver and mother a housewife. “My parents were my pillars of strength and they helped me a lot, as a result of which I could pass my exams” she said. She wants to become a teacher.

Daughter of a house help scores a distinction

Prachi lost her father when she was in Class 2. Her mother started working as a house help. Since then, Prachi had to juggle between the daily chores at home to help her mother and her studies. “My mother helped me a lot. Thanks to her for supporting me, I have finally managed to score such marks,” said Saudagar who wants to become a nutritionist. “I think my score has done justice to all the hardship that my mother underwent in all these years” she added. Prachi said that coming from an underprivileged background meant ten times more effort than other students.

Father is a paper Vendor, daughter a 93 percenter

Mahalaxmi claims that she did not do much to prepare for the exams. She only used the notes from her school and studied the topics daily as they were taught. “I had a habit of studying everyday, so I didn’t experience any problems as such.” Her parents are extremely happy for her. They say that they did expect such high marks. Mahalaxmi’s hobbies are reading and playing badminton. She is planning on pursuing commerce stream. She aspires to become a Chartered Accountant one day. However, she also knows that her journey to becoming a CA is not easy.

Track maintainer during the day, a student at night

Nanasaheb Nagre, who works with the suburban railways as a track maintainer, wanted to continue his education which he couldn’t do due to poor financial conditions during his school days.  “I am very happy with my result. I have four children and one of my son is an engineer. If I study further, it will be through distance education. I used to leave home from Thane for work at 6 am, work at the Diva railway station on the railway tracks and return home after attending night school. I used to carry my books as well as my clothes. My school was very supportive,” Nagre said.
