A Ghatkopar-based jeweller has registered a complaint with the Pant Nagar police alleging that he was duped by three unknown person who visited his shop posing as potential diamond buyers and decamped with a packet of original diamonds worth Rs 90 lakhs. The jeweller stated that the accused trio allegedly replaced the original diamond packet with fake diamonds.
According to the police, a case has been registered by jeweller Vasant Doshi, 62, owner of Bharati Jewellers at M G Road in Ghatkopar east. According to the complainant his nephew Maulik, 33, who looks after the diamond business from the jewellery shop was approached by three purchasers.
"Expressing interest in diamonds, the accused made two visits to the shop prior to committing the offence, during which they took note of the packet in which the diamonds were kept," said an officer, adding, "To gain trust of Maulik, they even offered an advance of Rs1 lakh on the first visit although they did not buy any diamonds."
On September 23, the trio once again visited the shop. While showing them the diamonds, Maulik received a call and seeing a window of opportunity, the trio replaced the original diamonds with fake ones. "The trio had come with the exact same packet that was used by Bharati Jewellers to keep the diamonds and replaced it with the original packet," said an officer.
It was only after the trio left the shop that Maulik realised that he had been duped and approached the police. "We have got the CCTV footage of the accused and have shared it with other police stations. We also believe that the accused may be from the same business as they seemed to know a lot about diamonds," said Shankar Dhanawade, senior police inspector with the Pant Nagar police station.
A case has been registered under IPC sections 420 (cheating) and 34 (common intention).
