The 8-year-old girl who was raped in Wadala on Oct 24, is on the slow road to recovery. To aid her rehabilitation, the Women and Child Welfare Department paid her family a compensation of Rs3.5 lakh under the Manodhairya Yojana on Wednesday. However, the money came in after a delay of one month.

What more does her father seek?
While the family is relieved to have receive the compensation, the father of the victim told dna that the matter was not just about financial help. "I urge the state government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to ensure the security of the children in the society. Moreover, the accused has not still been caught. The authorities have to ensure that my daughter's future is secure. The government should fund her education," he said.
The rule on compensation
Under Manodhairya Yojana, after the police registers an FIR in a rape case, the victim is entitled to a compensation of between Rs2 lakh and Rs3 lakh, and the money has to be paid within a week.

Has the whole amount been paid?
Chitra Wagh, member, Maharashtra's Women's Commission, said: "The compensation of Rs3.5 lakh is divided into three parts—Rs50,000 was handed over to her family upfront for treatment purposes; 25% of the fund or Rs 75,000 has been deposited in a savings account opened under her name; the rest of the amount (Rs2.25 lakh or 75%) is in her name in fixed deposits. She will receive it along with interest after she turns 18."

Has the girl recovered?
The girl who had sustained gruesome injuries to her private parts, later developed an adverse drug reaction (skin) due to the anti-HIV medication administered by the BMC-run Sion Hospital.
"Pus is oozing out of the inner lining of her mouth. She has developed fungal infection in the inner mucosal lining of her vagina. The infection has struck her intestines, mouth and vagina in a severe way. She will take at least another two weeks to recover," a senior doctor of Sion Hospital told dna.

Furore in BMC...
Meanwhile, in the BMC, corporators of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and other parties created a furore over the ill-treatment meted out to the girl by the police and the hospital, on Wednesday.
"We demand to know which doctor administered drugs that caused her adverse skin reaction. We also want to know why the accused has not been caught till now," said Sandeep Deshpande, MNS group leader in BMC.

What has Maria got to say?
Police commissioner of Mumbai Rakesh Maria said investigations were going on in the case. However, there hasn't been any headway. Wadala TT police have questioned 144 suspects, who were let off as there wasn't any evidence against any of them.
