The Maharashtra government has set up a four-member committee headed by the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) chairman and state cadre HAS officer Sanjay Bhatia for the time-bound redevelopment and modernisation of Sassoon Dock and Ferry Warf (Bhaucha Dhakka) under the national Rs 10 lakh crore Sagarmala project. The notification, issued on January 19, mandates proper coordination between the committee, Centre and State for speedy development of the project which entails an investment of Rs 52.17 crore which may rise to Rs 90 crore by the time it is complete which is currently estimated to be in two years.
Bhatia told DNA that the redevelopment of Sassoon Docks will progress in four phases. The revamp will follow global fishing practices and aims to lead to better sanitation and cleanliness along with promoting fish tourism and excursions. The master plan also includes features such as an air-conditioned fish market, creche and healthcare facilities, an open exhibition space and multi-cuisine restaurants.
According to an official from the state government, the revamp plan also includes developing a tourism spot on an area of 6,000 sqm of old Sassoon Docks. "The MbPT will undertake the consolidation of land for fish tourism by re-arranging fishing activities. The fish tourism plan will be implemented by using the most viable model of development,'' said the official.
The redevelopment plan also includes the removal of encroachment from the roads, installing a new system for cleaning the area, including dry and wet waste segregation and disposal processes, among others. The fish peeling activity, which is currently carried out in the open, will be shifted to a dedicated shed-like space under the new plan.
