On the occasion of Civil Services Day on April 21, Railway police commissioner Madhukar Pandey visited Lokamanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Kurla to appoint civilians as Police Mitras. Around a hundred people from different walks of life including bookstall owners, cobblers, coolies, food stall owners, taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers, were appointed as Police Mitras, to curb crimes that take place at the railway stations.

While speaking to iamin, Pandey said, “Every person needs to be vigilant, be it a police officer in uniform or a civilian. Safety and security of every citizen is a priority for us. People like bookstall owners, cobblers, coolies and food stall owners are always present on the railway platform and are likely to witness illegal or criminal activities happening. So we shall carry out a one day training session to help them identify anti-social elements and report them to the police.”

The squad will consist of 3,400 railway police officers and civilians across the Mumbai city. A helpline number, 9833331111 was also launched by the railway police, so that the civilians can report any illegal activity to the police immediately. “The concept of Police Mitra has been started to tackle various menaces like drug-peddling, chain-snatching, eve-teasing, robbery and illegal encroachment. We have asked people to stay alert and also create awareness amongst others,” added Pandey.

However, when iamin asked a senior police officer about the time span within which the police will reach the site, after a Police Mitra complains, he said, “As of now, we will not be able to say how much time it will take for cops to arrive at the spot, after being alerted.”
