A major fire broke out in the Johari Bazaar area of the city on Friday wherein five shops were gutted. The shops situated on the third floor of a mall were selling sarees which were totally gutted in the fire.

Notably a dozen fire tenders had to be pressed into service and fire fighters completely doused the fire in a little over half-and-hour. No loss to life was reported in the incident.

According to the fire officials, the incident occurred around 9 am at a commercial complex located at Haldiyon ka Rasta of Johari bazaar.

“The fire broke out in five shops located in Kanota Market on Haldiyon ka Rasta. Normal work was going on in the morning around the area when a local noticed smoke billowing out from one part of the market complex,” officials said.

As the news spread, the local police and fire department were informed. “On receiving the information, fire tenders were rushed to the spot. However, upon reaching the spot fire fighters faced difficulties, as the market was located in a secluded part while the alleys were narrow. Also the presence of dozens of electrical wires both outside the market and inside, made it difficult to immediately start operations,” officials said.

It took fire fighters time to remove the obstructions and reach the third floor of the complex, however, as soon as they were able to move about, they rushed to the floor. “The entire floor was covered in smoke while the sarees in the shops were burning. The fire fighting started and since the fire had spread in five shops and could have spread to nearby areas, one after the other eleven fire tenders were rushed to the spot and all the water in the tenders was spent after which the fire was completely doused,” officials said.

Meanwhile, it is suspected that the outbreak occurred due to short circuit.
