The images of a five-month-old child performing last rites of his martyred father Mukut Bihari Meena shook everyone and drew emotional reactions. Moved by the image of young Aaru and perturbed by her loss, Jhalawar collector Jitendra Kumar Soni penned down an emotional letter for the martyr’s daughter where he laid bare the whirlpool of emotions he experienced at the time of funeral, which was attended by him along with several others.

“Dear Aaru, when you will grow up and understand that paratrooper Mukut Bihari Meena hailing from a village of 100 houses sacrificed his life during a search operation in Kashmir, you will be able to hold your head high with great pride...Your father had promised to meet you on Rakshabandhan, but he instead kept the promise he had made to mother India and selflessly gave his life for the nation,” read Soni’s letter. The moment when Aaru prostrated on the tri-colour draped coffin that carried his father’s body has also been described in the letter. “When you were seated on the coffin and touched it without crying, I could not understand what was going on in your heart and mind...but that was very emotional. I and several army officers present during the funeral were watching you and I can say that it was your innocence and your father’s supreme sacrifice that was on everyone’s mind.”

The collector further wrote that the sacrifice of his father would inspire youths to join army and something she will also be proud of. “Daughter Aaru, when you will grow up and, read and listen about your father, you will be filled with respect for him and all martyrs. You will not grow up clutching his finger, but instead will get to listen of his sacrifice. When his loss will hurt you, don’t forget to remind yourself that not every is fortunate to sacrifice his live for the nation,” wrote Soni.
