Claims he has political backing

NEW DELHI: Gangster Brijesh Singh, recently arrested by the Delhi police from his hideout in Bhubaneshwar, has disclosed during interrogation that he had the backing of politicians.

Brijesh has revealed that his nephew Sushil Singh is a BSP legislator from Danapur (UP) and his wife, Annapoorna, is an active BSP member.

The revelations assume importance as the BSP supremo and UP chief minister Mayawati had recently alleged that Brijesh was plotting to kill her. Sources said Sushil and his gunmen were travelling on the same train in which Brijesh was taken to Mumbai.
What remains unclear is why Mayawati chose to give importance to Brijesh’s relatives when she thought that the gangster had been planning to eliminate her.

According to the interrogation report (a copy of which is in DNA’s possession), Brijesh, also known to be an associate of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, worked under the patronage of at least 10 politicians.

They include controversial MLA Raja Bhaiya, Brijesh’s elder brother Chulbul Singh, BJP MLC from Varanasi Jaswant Singh, SP MLC from Azamgarh Arjun Singh, a Trinamool Congress MLA from Kolkata and several former MLAs and MPs from various states.

Brijesh has also confessed to plotting and executing 23 murders in different states. He has also informed that former BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai worked closely with him in several murder cases. Rai was killed allegedly by politician and UP strongman Mukhtar Ansari’s gang in 2005.

During the 20 years that Brijesh was evading arrest, he had amassed huge amounts of wealth and invested in real estate, railway and PWD tenders, scrap business and coal mines in several states. He is known to have recently sold an apartment housing six flats for Rs62 lakh in Bhubaneshwar.

Brijesh told the police that he also possessed a huge stash of weapons, including AK-47 rifles, automatic pistols, carbines and other semi automatic weapons. He used to make the investments under the name of Arun Kuma, under which he had several bank accounts and credit cards.

Brijesh is presently in police custody in Mumbai for his involvement in the 1992 JJ Hospital shootout case in which he and his accomplices had killed Haldankar, an associate of gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli and two police constables.
