A day after a junior doctor of a private hospital was allegedly assaulted by a police officer, doctors' associations stood by the victim doctor hailing from Andhra Pradesh on Thursday and demanded the arrest of the police officer.

Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP and secretary of the West Bengal unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Santanu Sen, said that unless the accused police officer, OC of Jadavpur Police Station Pulak Kumar Dutta was arrested and charged with non-bailable sections, no doctor would treat any police officer. "Call for the Doctors: If OC of Jadavpur Police Station is not arrested under non bailable sections for assaulting Doctor in CMRI within 24 hours, then no Doctor should treat any Police Person," Sen wrote on social media platform.

Sen had also met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and discussed the matter with her. "It is unfortunate that policemen who are there to protect people, themselves assault a doctor. The CM has assured that disciplinary action would be taken against the offending officer," he said after meeting the CM. Later, however, Sen had deleted his Facebook post.

In another development, members of West Bengal Doctors' Forum too said that if Dutta was not arrested immediately they would start a greater movement. "We will wait till Sunday. If no step is taken against Dutta till then, we will go for a movement. If need be, we can also initiate a strike," said Rezauel Karim, president of the forum.

Dutta had been admitted to a private hospital at Ekbalpore following an injury in his right arm. On Wednesday evening, Dr Srinivas Geddam went to attend him. It has been alleged that Dutta misbehaved with him at that time and then an altercation followed. After that Dutta twisted Geddam's right arm and hit him with his fist on his face.

Later, it has also been alleged that Geddam had been given veiled threats. Santosh Uttamrao Nimbalkar, Deputy Commissioner South Western Division, said, "The matter is being investigated and whoever is found guilty, will be punished."

Hospital authorities said that they were yet to file a formal complaint but added that senior police officers had assured of all necessary actions.
