Woman accused of killing in-laws commits suicide in Tihar jail

A 35-year-old woman accused of killing her aged in-laws last week has allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in a Tihar Jail cell, police said on Tuesday.

Praveen alias Kavita was lodged at the Central Jail-6 at the Tihar prison after she was sent her on April 25 following the arrest over the charges of killing her father-in-law and mother-in-law along with her husband. 

According to information provided by jail officials, she was found hanging from an exhaust fan inside her jail cell on the intervening night of April 26 and April 27. She eas taken to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital where she was declared brought dead, and the reason of death was stated as hanging. She had used her dupatta to hang herself from the fan.  

The woman along with her husband was arrested on April 24 after her mother-in-law and father-in-law, aged 58 and 61 respectively, were found dead at their home in West Delhi's Chhawla locality. They were strangulated and then stabbed, police said. 

Her husband and two children were present at the home when the incident took place. 

A case was registered against the couple at the Chhawla police station under Indian Penal Code sections 302 (murder), 309 (attempt to suicide), 120(B) (criminal conspiracy), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Deepak Purohit said.

Her husband Satish Kumar, who was unemployed and financially dependent on his parents, was also arrested in the case. Cops believe that the murders were linked to a property dispute. 

She had also tried to commit suicide after killing her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Purohit said.
