Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday lashed out at Congress party after Raj Babbar dragged his mother into the shrill Assembly poll campaign comparing the rupee's falling value against the US dollar with her age.

On Friday, while addressing a rally, Raj Babbar had said that (Before becoming the prime minister) Modi used to say that compared to the (US) dollar, the value of the rupee has fallen to a level where it is almost the same as the age of the then Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh).

Modi's mother Hiraba is a nonagenarian. The rupee has seen a continued fall against the US dollar this year, hovering a little over the 70-mark on Friday.

Reacting to his remarks, Modi lashed out at Congress party  and said that when one doesn't have issues to talk about, they resorts to abusing somebody else's mother.

The Prime Minister also asked if Congress doesn't have the strength to fight Narendra Modi. "Will their deposits be saved if they abuse Modi's mother. The mother who doesn't even know 'R' of politics, who is spending her time worshiping god at home... and you drag her in politics," said Modi in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur.

In an apparent reference to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Modi said that the government is not run by madam with remote control. "Coffers of banks were emptied for rich during madam's government, but we opened banks' doors for needy youth," he said.

Modi also said that while BJP is filled with enthusiasm as the poll date nears in state, Congress is worried about its candidates losing deposits. "People had voted Congress out of power in Madhya Pradesh 15 years ago because of its divisive politics," he said.

Madhya Pradesh goes to polls on November 28.

Earlier, attacking Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi had accused him of bringing ignominy to all chowkidars (watchmen) in the country.

"Wherever you go, as you pronounce the word "chowkidar" comes a reply "chor hai". I want to apologise to the chowkidars of the country. It is not your mistake, you all are not thieves, you all are honest. Only one person has brought ignominy to you. The country's prime minister has defamed all its chowkidars," he said.

Gandhi, who faces a defamation suit for claiming that Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's son was named in the 'Panama Papers', said, "I spoke mistakenly that Shivraj ji's son was named in Panama Papers, actually it was Chhattisgarh CM's son. Shivraj ji threatened me of filing defamation suit." "But when I talk about scams like e-tendering, Vyapam, illegal mining and mid-day meal scam, he (Shivraj) doesn't speak a word, he doesn't threaten to file defamation. What does it mean," he said.
